One Question We All Need to Ask

There’s a great quote in the movie Office Space.

Actually, there are a lot of great quotes in the movie, but I want to zero in on one in particular.

In this scene, the fictional, soul-sucking company Initech has brought in a pair of consultants. Two guys…both named Bob.

The “Bobs” as they’re called are interviewing employees about their jobs.

The chatter is that the Bobs will use the interviews to determine which employees get to keep their jobs at Initech and who gets laid off.

When the Bobs are ready to cut to the chase in their interviews, they ask this question:

“What would you say you do here?”

It’s a great scene. But the best thing about it is how sticky that quote is.

“What would you say you do here?”

It’s a question I ask myself…in one way or another…all the time. I just can’t shake that quote.

You see, several years ago I felt an irresistible call to commit my life to helping other people.

I owned a successful paving business and spent my time developing leaders inside my company, but I felt drawn to something completely different.

Have you ever felt that way?

Have you ever been deeply rooted in one area, but felt that your true calling…your real identity…was pulling you in another direction?

It happens to a lot of us.

Because I felt so passionately about helping other people, I did what probably seemed crazy to a lot of people.

I sold my paving business and committed my life and resources to helping other people grow.

Everything I do now is about helping other people be the best they can be.

But before I get carried away, let’s get back to the Office Space quote.

Helping other people…it’s a big topic.

And it’s a big task.

It’s not an easy job.

Are you in a position where you help people?

For example…

Do you manage a team at your workplace?

Do you lead a small group at your church?

Is it your job to deliver amazing customer service?

Do you raise kids?

Do you do anything that involves helping other people?

If so, these words are for you.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

When you’re in the business of helping other people, what those people get isn’t necessarily what you think you’re giving.

Stick with me here.

See, what I do is train leaders to communicate, to exceed expectations, and to live with integrity and intentionality.

I walk people through practical steps that I know will help them in their personal and professional lives.

That’s what I give.

But what people get from me…and from you…is completely different.

What people get…is hope.

What kind of hope?

All kinds.

Hope that their circumstances won’t always be the same.

Hope they they can become the very best version of themselves.

Hope that they can reach new levels of success.

Hope that they can overcome the nagging stress and frustration in their lives.

Hope that they can achieve their vision of the future.

So…

What would I say I do here?

I give people hope.

If you’re a person who helps other people…what would you say you do here?

Well, I’d say: you give people hope.

And that might be one of the very best things you can do for someone.
